2018-2019 Jane A. Gouker Endowment Scholarship Winners

Junior violinist Elliott Stevens from BHS North and sophomore violist Josie Sparks from BHS South are this school year’s Jane A. Gouker Endowment scholarship winners. Both are student musicians in the Hoosier Youth Philharmonic. Interested students applied for the awards through a confidential online form, with preference given on basis of need and dedication and service to HYP. Each scholarship of $250 will be used to offset expenses incurred for the students’ musical experiences, such as: instrument rental, private lessons, HYP trip fees, etc. The winners were announced at the 34th annual Night of Dance performance by the HYP. The Endowment is honored to help present HYP students in this way.

Congratulations, Elliott and Josie! For more information about the endowment please visit

Chili Supper Success

Thanks to each student, parent, booster and all who worked together to make HYP Chili Supper 2019 a great success. Your donations, volunteerism, and musicianship kept the chili supper tradition a cut above. After expenses, we raised $3,000! One very special bonus of the night and left over chili was that a few booster parents delivered the excess to Wheeler Mission. Because of your food donation, we not only raised funds, we fed those in need. Thank you!

HYP at State ISSMA!

Here are some glimpses of HYP soloists and ensemble members participating in the Indiana State School Music Association state competition in Indianapolis on February 23, 2019. Students advanced to state by achieving a gold rating at the regional ISSMA competition held in November at Bloomington High School North.

HYP/Bloomington Symphony Orchestra Side by Side Concert

The HYP was thrilled to participate in the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra Side-by-Side Concert at Bloomington South on February 10th. Led by Bloomington Symphony Orchestra conductor Alejandro Gómez Guillén, the HYP and the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra performed Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughn Williams. This piece calls for two orchestra, with the first orchestra being the larger of the two. North’s larger orchestra was the first orchestra and South was the second orchestra. BSO members were seated with students throughout the North and South orchestras.

String Spectacular 2019

The annual HYP/elementary/middle school String Spectacular concert was held January 15, 2019,in the BHS North gym. In keeping with tradition, HYP families treated guests afterwards with punch and cookies. Ms. Gouker, Mr. Hansen and students representing the orchestras spoke to the audience in between pieces that ranged from “Hot Cross Buns” to Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”. The concert drew to a beautiful close with all the ensembles performing together Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”. Many thanks to all the students, teachers, administration, and families who make this annual event possible.

Holiday Concert 2018

The combined MCCSC middle school orchestras joined the HYP for a wonderful night of music and fun in the Bloomington South auditorium on Dec. 12, 2018. The second violins were the winners of this year’s HYP skit contest with their cowbell skit. Happy holidays!
