After weekly practices on the BHS South football field HYP presented a physically distanced outdoor fall concert on October 14, 2020. A power outage on the football field caused a last minute change of venue to the BHS South softball field. Gusty weather made it a sport to keep music in place and music stands upright. Uniforms were not available but the HYP outfit committee provided each orchestra member with a custom made HYP face covering. Despite all the challenges the concert was beautiful and certainly memorable. The event was covered by the Herald Times with a livestream, followed by a front page story on October 16, 2020.
On October 10, 2020, a small ensemble of HYP members gave a physically distanced outdoor performance at Redbud retirement community.
The annual Jane A. Gouker Endowment Scholarship competition is now underway. Interested students should go to the Endowment website: janeagoukerendowment.org to find the application and all the details. The application process will run through Sunday, Oct. 25th at 11:59PM. The Endowment awards one $250 scholarship to an HYP North musician and one $250 scholarship to an HYP South musician. The monies must be used for expenses associated with the HYP, such as: instrument rental fees, private lessons fees, etc. Student applicants must be a member of the HYP for the entire school year; must have been in the MCCSC Orchestra program for at least two years; and preference is given to those with two or more years experience in the high school orchestra and a financial need. The winners will be announced on Monday, Nov.2nd, on the Endowment website.
This fundraiser runs through November 30th. In-store it can be scanned and ordering online the code can be entered. HYP gets 5% from each purchase and entered to win bigger prizes the more often you buy!
Here are just a few of our HYP students who had a triumphant leap day 2020 at ISSMA State in Indianapolis.
On February 13, 2020, HYP student and parent volunteers baked and decorated over 1,000 cookies at Bloomington High School North. Many thanks to this year’s cookie bake organizers Sarah Waite and Jen Buehler and to all the volunteers who helped with this annual fundraiser. These cookies, with personalized messages, were delivered to students at both high schools on Valentine’s Day.
HYP was well represented at solo & ensemble contest held February 8, 2020, at BHS North. Congratulations to all our performers!
HYP will host its annual Chili Supper in the South cafeteria on March 6th. Tickets will be available from HYP students or at the door. Please come enjoy music and food while supporting the HYP. Thanks!
