Thanks to each student, parent, booster and all who worked together to make HYP Chili Supper 2019 a great success. Your donations, volunteerism, and musicianship kept the chili supper tradition a cut above. After expenses, we raised $3,000! One very special bonus of the night and left over chili was that a few booster parents delivered the excess to Wheeler Mission. Because of your food donation, we not only raised funds, we fed those in need. Thank you!
Here are some glimpses of HYP soloists and ensemble members participating in the Indiana State School Music Association state competition in Indianapolis on February 23, 2019. Students advanced to state by achieving a gold rating at the regional ISSMA competition held in November at Bloomington High School North.
Wagon Wheel restaurant, deli and meat shop will host a dine to donate event for HYP on Feb. 20th and Feb. 21st, from 3-7PM. Present this flyer when you pay and the HYP will receive a 15% donation of the total amount you spend. Wagon Wheel is located at 1915 S. Walnut Street.
The HYP was thrilled to participate in the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra Side-by-Side Concert at Bloomington South on February 10th. Led by Bloomington Symphony Orchestra conductor Alejandro Gómez Guillén, the HYP and the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra performed Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughn Williams. This piece calls for two orchestra, with the first orchestra being the larger of the two. North’s larger orchestra was the first orchestra and South was the second orchestra. BSO members were seated with students throughout the North and South orchestras.
The annual HYP/elementary/middle school String Spectacular concert was held January 15, 2019,in the BHS North gym. In keeping with tradition, HYP families treated guests afterwards with punch and cookies. Ms. Gouker, Mr. Hansen and students representing the orchestras spoke to the audience in between pieces that ranged from “Hot Cross Buns” to Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”. The concert drew to a beautiful close with all the ensembles performing together Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”. Many thanks to all the students, teachers, administration, and families who make this annual event possible.
This year’s HYP Night of Dance will be held Friday, Nov. 2, 7:30-10PM in the Bloomington North cafeteria. What is Night of Dance? Night of Dance is an evening where the HYP plays a variety of dance music; seniors are recognized; fancy desserts, snacks, drinks and coffee are served (concessions). The lights are low and the cafeteria is decorated, complete with a mirror ball, for dancing. This year, the JAG Endowment Scholarship Winners will be announced! HYP alums also attend this concert and “bump” a current player and join the orchestra in playing one of their favorites. Don’t forget to bring a little extra spending money for concessions, HYP gear, and grocery cards and Scrip cards. The public is invited. Tickets are $8 and are available from HYP members or at the door.
HYP’s newest fundraiser is a coffee and tea fundraiser! Grounds for Change is fair trade certified, organic certified, carbon-free certified and shade grown. To find out more visit http://www.groundsforchange.com. Building on a successful sale in the fall, coffee and tea orders will again be available January 15th – January 25th. Orders are expected to arrive mid-February.
